COMPLEX, COMPREHENSIVE, COLLABORATION
Reducing poverty-related barriers faced by students and families requires comprehensive community collaboration and enables schools in poverty-impacted communities to focus on transforming academic outcomes.
We are committed to advancing racial equity as a foundational element of all aspects of our work and with all of our stakeholders.
We collaborate with our community partners who bring mentors to work with children, families and schools so that students are thriving in the midst of a system where their life experiences are not always represented. We create enrichment programming that increase college awareness and access and one on one support of a mentor who makes long-term relationships.
Culture of College and Career
College readiness begins right away and we believe it’s never too early to get ready. We work with students to build resiliency that ultimately leads to academic success. We expose students to a variety of higher education and career options, then help them develop a plan and reach their goals, whatever they may be.
We believe that all parents want the best for their children. Our goal with parent leadership is to create partnerships with families built on trust. We partner with and support parents to be informed and to be their children's best advocate.
Through our partnerships with teachers, community partners, and colleges, we are able to bring academic support to our students who are struggling in core classes such as math, reading, and science. Our academic intervention services range from summer, after school, in school, and in home programs.
Housing and Social Services
Through the Alder Housing Program, we team up with Home Forward, Human Solutions, and Reynolds School District to provide stability for families of Alder students by means of emergency rental assistance, connecting families to social services, family attachment to Alder Elementary and providing workshops. Our goal is to ensure our students and families have the highest quality experience of success.
We empower children and families to connect with Alder Elementary early through Play and Learn groups and Montessori preschool. We believe that early and consistent exposure to early learning helps ease the transition into Kindergarten and beyond.
College Preparation and Support
The college admission process can be overwhelming and confusing, especially for those who are first in their family to navigate this complex system. We prepare our students to be strong applicants, recruit them for college preparation and success programs, and help guide them through the admission process. Our support doesn't end at high school graduation; we continue helping our students navigate the higher education system until they earn a degree and secure a living wage job.
Summer and After School Programs
We work with students throughout the year in after-school programs designed to encourage leadership and social skill development. Working with Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) and other youth-advocacy partners, our after school programs emphasize service-learning projects, identity exploration, and peer mediation and support. During the summer months we have a camp which take students on adventures in the Oregon wilderness. While visiting some of our states' most famed and scenic locations, students are encouraged to ask questions, test their limits and learn through exploring.
